The M5 was closed in both directions due to a police incident in Somerset this morning (Monday, August 22). A man was taken to hospital after suffering “non-life-threatening injuries", police have confirmed.

An incident was reported between Taunton and Wellington and the motorway was closed in both directions. Traffic monitoring agency Inrix reported the collision at around 8.45am this morning.

At 9.06am, Avon and Somerset Police said in a tweet: “The M5 is currently closed in both directions between J25 and J26 while emergency services respond to a concern for welfare incident. The air ambulance is due land on the carriageway to take an injured man to hospital.

“Motorists are advised to expect delays.”

Avon and Somerset Police confirmed that the motorway has reopened and have thanked drivers for their patience.

“The motorway is now open,” Avon and Somerset Police said in a short statement.

“The injured man has been taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

“We’d like to thank the public for their patience while emergency services responded to this incident.”
